8th July 2010 - renovation date announced
The long delayed start on the renovation of the Abingdon museum will be in October 2010. WIth it will come a much more upmarket Gallery devoted to the MG. The gallery will appear from what was two rooms, one of which was half full of museum material, this will be transformed into one large room with up to date display cases and proper enviromental control on the heating and air conditioning.
CCTV cameras will transmit to the lower level of the building where the disabled, or people who don't fancy the climb up the staircase, will be able to view exhibits. This will enable the MG Gallery to be open without supervision, with Abingdon Works Centre personnel ready to attend when visitors give notice of their intention to visit and most weekends.
It is estimated that the cost of creating the Gallery, and puchasing new stock, will be £20,000. The museum renovation as a whole will cost in excess of £3,000,000. Much of this will be covered by a Lottery grant, and other municipal grants, but there remains a £400,000 hole to fill. Money donated for the MG Gallery will be ring-fenced for that purpose.
