GEL 513N was bought on a drunken evening in Kolkata, India using the devil’s plaything known as Ebay. I reminisced about a simpler time in my life when I drove an MGB as a teenager, had just discovered girls and cars, and girls riding in cars. I tinkered under the bonnet, fixing issues with youthful glee and still feeling the thrill of learning about SU carb settings from a Haynes manual.

Little did I know buying the car would lead me on an odyssey though Europe to Gdansk in Poland where a friend’s father restored the bodywork with just his English speaking daughter and a parts catalogue to help him and then to a trip circumnavigating the UK, helping me reconnect to my homeland after many years overseas. The camaraderie, friendship, smiles, compliments and stares this car have bought me have been my reward for loving an old car – because cars like this have a soul.
