History

I bought my MGA Coupe in 1985 for £1,800. The body needed a lot of attention, like new bottom half of the rear wings and a new right hand front wing, a few dents to iron out, in fact a complete body-off job.

I handed it over to an ex-MG Employee Alan Evans who had used his redundancy money, when the factory closed, to set up his own business rebuilding MGs. The business has been such a success that he has been able to teach his son the trade and it is he who now carries it on, with dad in semi retirement. The paintwork has not been touched since that time and still looks pretty good.

I needed to do some work on the suspension and brakes, but the engine sounded OK and had good oil pressure etc. so I limited the work on it to lifting the head and touching in the valves, noting as I did so that the bores had no suspicion of a ridge round the top.

I then rather foolhardily drove it, with my wife, down to the French Riviera. The only problem I had was when I stalled it at a road junction and the starter jammed into the starter ring. However , with the aid of some of the drivers of the cars who I was holding up, we rocked the car and it pinged out and has never given me that trouble since.

On arrival in Monaco we sat near the edge of the beach with the car parked in the middle of the wide road with some others. Soon a police car arrived and went along the parked cars putting notices under the wipers warning that we were illegally parked and next time would be prosecuted. This was printed in French on one side and English on the other with the splendid Monaco police logo in the top corner. I still have it framed in my room.
