March 2018 – 1967 MGB V8 Roadster
I was the proprietor of a bodyshop when I bought this car. It had a 3.5 litre V8 engine, badly fitted, and was VERY scruffy. Over the next 18 months I stripped everything off the shell, replaced floor panels, inner wings and anything else that looked rusty or tired. The sills were ‘seen to’ and strengthened.
Next came the seam sealing, primer and paint, the inside was painted in the original Pale Primrose, the outside painted in Jaguar Opalescent Pale Primrose.
I had already sourced an R380 gearbox which was overhauled and fitted with the highest 5th gear I could find. I was offered a 4 litre engine from a smashed TR8 which I heard running so bought it and fitted in the ‘B’.

I fitted uprated front suspension, 4 pot callipers, a 3.07 rear differential, spax rear shock absorbers, parabolic rear springs and anti-tramp bars. New seats and carpets etc.
My wife and I then set out to tour Holland, Northern Germany, Denmark and Sweden.
There was an occasional ‘knocking’ from the engine which popular opinion said the rear cam lobes were worn so I bought a ‘stump puller’ cam and removed the old one. The old one was perfect! On further investigation it was found that when the engine was originally built someone had painted the inside of the sump and much of the paint had come off and was now partially blocking the oilways – hence good oil pressure!
I then bought a new 4.6 litre bottom end to rebuild the engine.
I have also built my own seats as we found the standard seats very uncomfortable over long distances. Since then we have toured France and Southern Ireland in it.
