November 2017 – 1961 MGA 1600 Mk II Roadster
This is an RHD export car originally owned by a British Army officer who took it with him wherever he was posted around the world. In the 1980s it ended up in the hands of Art Mafli in Washington State, USA, who campaigned it widely in events run by the USA MGCC NW Centre. Art sold it to Steve Hanegan (another US MGCC member) of Lake Forest Park, near Seattle, in 2007 who called the car Arthur in Art’s honour! I bought the car unseen from Steve via an advert in the back pages of Safety Fast! in 2013 and imported it.
I was delighted to discover that it was in remarkably sound and original condition, reflecting a small number of caring owners and a total current mileage of around 81,000 from new. The registration process involved a 3-month battle with DVLA bureaucracy, but the car now carries the number from my 1960 MGA, which was sadly destroyed in a fire in 2004.

I have refreshed the original engine with a ‘warm’ cam and Peter Burgess worked his wonders on the original head. At the same time I installed a Type 9 5-speed box. The car’s driven throughout the year and the greatest achievement so far is a class win on the 2016 Kimber Trial!
