2007 Summer Day Out
Sunday 22nd July saw the Summer Day Out that nearly wasn’t! Torrential rain in the run-up to the event saw severe flooding in the surrounding counties and in the West Country. Many entrants failed to show due to flooding in their own areas, sending their apologies by phone, although a good number of cars did make it. Three road runs, starting at Abingdon, Alton and Aylesbury, arrived at the historic setting of Mapledurham House near Reading.
The real heroes of the day, however, were Committee members Richard and Gill Martin. Living near the River Ock in flood-hit Abingdon, they had to abandon their house at 2.00am on the Sunday, being the last ones to escape from their area before the roads became impassable. Paying scant attention to their personal possessions, including clothes, their first thought was for the event and they threw everything for the day into the car! Without their sense of duty it would have been much less of a day. Thank you, Richard and Gill.
