2017 St. George’s Day Run
This year’s event, which also celebrated the FBHVC’s Drive-it-Day, saw over 30 cars gather in Abingdon at Miele on the site of the former MG factory. Refreshments were on offer with a wonderful selection of Monika’s cakes and it wasn’t long before there was also the waft of cooking bacon in the air as Sarah got to grips with the oven! The proceeds, which I believe were around 80 pounds, all going to charity. We’re grateful to Miele for their hospitality which makes for a great start to the day.
Feeling refreshed and with the sun having broken through the clouds, cars, with navigator’s armed with route books, started out on a westerly route, the early part of which travelled along the former factory test routes. Driving along roads through Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire with names such as Digging Lane and Dog Trap Lane whilst looking for signs to Macaroni Woods or delightfully named English villages such as Broughton Poggs, after some 58 miles we arrived at our destination, The Swindon &Cricklade Railway. As it was a steaming day, rides were available with ‘Spartan’, a 1953 locomotive, taking you to Taw Valley Halt or Hayes Knoll Station before returning to the starting point, Blunsdon.
A great day out with an excellent route and a lot of fun was had by all. Many thanks to Pete & Sarah Davies, whose wedding anniversary it was, for their wonderful organisation and for allowing us to gate-crash your anniversary celebrations.
